Here we have 2 pictures of the same pumping system that has benefited from a “Clean & Check” service from the Basement Sump & Pump Co
The difference is plain to see! All the components of the system on the right hand side were “Cleaned & Checked” resulting in peace of mind for the home owner that the pumping station was going to provide faithful service for another 12 months.
An annual ‘Clean and Check’ for sewage pumps costs £149 – a small price to pay for the peace of mind in knowing your sewerage pump is working just as well as the first day it was installed. For advice on what not to flush down the lavatory and hints on how to avoid macerator toilet problems check out our macerator advice page.
At the Basement Sump And Pump Co we will service the pumps nobody likes to think about.
The photos below show a sewage pump that has not been serviced for over 2 years, the client only called us out when he thought there maybe a problem. As it was, when our engineer arrived at the property the sewage was only a few inches from flooding into the property and after it had had a service.

The moral to this tale? Its never a good idea to leave a ‘Clean & Check’ to the last minute, as the owner of the property has now realised and has now signed up to our annual ‘Clean and Check’ scheme to make sure he doesn’t find himself in that predicament again!

At the Basement Sump and Pump Co we are receiving an ever increasing number of enquiries about macerator pumps. To help people looking at having a macerator pump installed and indeed people who already have one installed here is our brief guide to some key points about macerators.
A macerator looks very much like a standard toilet and occupies about the same amount of floor space. But instead of draining the flushed water down into the floor, the system transports it through a pump contained in a small box, typically located behind the toilet and against the wall.
Macerator pumps interact with toilets in, for example, basement situations. The macerator decreases the size of the waste through grinding any waste. The razor sharp blades contained in the macerator pump grind the semi-solid waste allowing for an easy and quick flow. As macerators contain a pump they are ideal for toilets within basements as the waste can be pumped to the necessary exit point.
The best way to explain this is to show you! Here we see an example of a Saniflow system system:
In all toilet systems the waste water collected from the macerator contains solid organic residues, toilet paper and other similar solids. If there are any unsuitable materials that have been flushed away may clog the mechanisms and cause a blockage. Items such as baby wipes, paper towels, sanitary towels, carrier bags and condoms can cause blockages.
There are few things in life more unpleasant than the thought of having to unblock a clogged macerator. Trust the Basement Sump & Pump Co to keep your macerator in tip top condition with an annual ‘Clean & Check’. We will check all the major components of the system and ensure that there are no blockages to impede its performance.

When our engineers take a pump out to clean most of our customers are shocked at just how much dirt and build up of scales can happen over a year between “Clean and Checks”.
As the photo here shows, this pump had a service only a year ago and in that time the basement pump has given faithful service behind the scenes to keep the basement dry. However, the years hard work has taken it’s toll and dirt and scale deposits can lead to problems with the pump.
To some people the basement pump is a fit and forget item and only remember their faithful hardworking friend when it breaks down and the basement becomes damp. Remember, out of sight shouldn’t mean out of mind don’t forget how hard it works for you! Treat it to a “Clean and Check” today!

I know it’s not nice to think about……but yes, even sewage pumps also need to be serviced regularly to ensure they are performing as they should. Our sewage pump engineer recently visited a property in London where the sewage pump for the lavatory in the basement was playing up and as a result causing distress to the home owner.

After a thorough “Clean & Check” and full power-wash down the sewage pump was as good as new and running just as it should do! The sewage pump had gone without a service for over 2 years but is now on a regular maintenance schedule to ensure it remains trouble free.

We all tend to forget how hard electrical equipment works whilst it’s working, but when the unthinkable happens and it breaks down we start to panic! Just think if your boiler broke down in the dead of winter!
Your basement sump and pump unit is is no different, as limescale builds up on and around the pump and in the sump this can cause the pump to operate at reduced efficiency and ultimately could lead to an untimley breakdown when you least expect it.
An annual ‘Clean & Check’ will help to keep you sump pump unit in tip top condition. The photo to the left shows a sump pump unit after one of our engineers has serviced the pump. Can you really afford not to have your sump pump unit serviced?

It’s amazing what our engineers find when they are cleaning out sump pump units. Here we have a photo taken by one of our London maintenance engineers whilst performing a ‘Clean & Check’ pump service on a commercial pump unit in a London basement.
The waterproofing system that was in place did not have any filters on the inlets, allowing all manner of things to enter the sump pump unit and potentially cause problems to the impeller. All the items you can see in the photo were actually stuck in the impeller!
Thankfully the Basement Sump & Pump Co got to this pump in time but if left unchecked performance would have been seriously impeded creating a potential flood risk.

Here’s another great example of what our engineers find in customers sumps. On a recent annual ‘Clean & Check’ visit our engineer prepared to start the cleaning of the sump – nothing strange there, until he looked inside the sump and found 3 inches of mud in the bottom of the sump! The customers property had a stream running nearby which as a result caused unexpected levels of mud and silt build up in the sump.
Our engineer removed all the mud from the sump and gave the sump and pump unit a thorough service leaving it in tip top condition and ready for another 12 months work. If the customer had neglected the pump and not had it serviced it would have tried to suck up the mud up along with any water that was in the sump. This would have caused either the pump to burn out or the impellers to split – either way incurring costs as a result.

One of our basement pump engineers visited a property recently after we received a phone call from a concerned customer in London worring about a bad smell in her kitchen that seemed to be coming from the basement.
Upon arrival at the property there indeed appeared to be an odour coming from the basement but only upon opening the basement pump did the engineer find the source of the odour. Fatty deposits in the water from the dishwasher were found to be clinging to the pump and float switch (See picture). If left untreated this would have caused a potential flooding problem as the float switch would become too heavy and not rise with the water level. The float switch detects the amount of liquid in the sump and then activates the pump to remove the liquid from the sump chamber and avoid flooding.
On the base of pump the inlet holes had also become blocked with fatty deposits which would result in the water not being able to be sucked up by the pump and possible flooding of the basement had the owner not called in the Basement Sump & Pump Co to perform a ‘Clean & Check’ on the system.
Thankfully the relieved homeowner was spared a flooded basement!

Here’s a great example of a basement pump that our basement maintenance engineer came across in London recently. As you can see the pump was coated is deposits and as a result having a detrimental effect on the performance of the pump unit. You may think that build up was after many years faithful service keeping the basement dry but no - it was after only 2 years use!
It is amazing how many people neglect their basement sump pump units having spent thousands on converting the basement in to a fantastic extra room. (For some ideas check out this article about converting your basement by Martin Roberts from the News of the World). Also, often with many basement waterproofing installers the terms of the guarantee state that the pump must be serviced annually to comply with the terms and conditions of the guarantee.
Our comprehensive basement “Clean & Check” gives you the total peace of mind that your basement pump unit is working to the best of it’s abilities and keeping your basement how you want it – dry! Heres two great pics of a basement pump unit before and after cleaning. The before picture clearly shows the lime build up on the pump unit and the after showing a clean unit after descaling. I know which pump I’d want protecting my basement and keeping it dry!
