Why Do You Need A Battery Backup for An Existing Sump Pump System?

September 30, 2020

No matter which type of sump pump system you have installed, it may at some point eventually fail as a result of a power outage.

It is therefore important that the Battery Backup pump is working to ensure that the sump pump system will still be working to keep the basement dry whilst there are no mains electric.

We would always recommend that every basement sump pump system must have a Battery Backup system in place.

This means that even if there is a power failure the Battery Backup will kick in to pump away water. Battery Backup systems are an integral part of the whole waterproofing system.

Why Do I Need Battery Backup For My Sump Pump?

A question we often get asked is, “Do I need a Battery Backup for my sump pump system?” The most common answer we say is “Yes”.

The reason we say this is that even though you may not be in an area that is prone to power outages, it only takes one power cut to happen to cause severe damage to your basement through flooding which will prove to be costly to fix.

The reasons why you need a Battery Backup for a sump pump:

  • Stormy weather can knock out the mains power
  • Heavy rainfall can cause damage to the main pump
  • The primary pump can eventually fail

How Does a Battery Backup System for a Sump Pump Work?

A sump pump system works by alleviating the water from the sump basin and pushing it out of the house to a drain off point. A sump pump system draws electricity from circuits in your house, so when you lose power to the house the sump pump will stop working. Even if it is for only a small amount of time (e.g. a couple of hours), you could still end up having a flooded basement.

A Battery Backup sump pump kicks in when the main sump pump system has no power running to it. The backup sump pump works independently from the primary pump and will start working if the primary pump fails to start working.

The main use of the Battery Backup is to provide a full defence against the buildup of groundwater. In addition to the normal functionality, the control box will turn on the Battery Backup once a month to make sure that is working properly.

If the pump does fail for whatever reason, then the box will alert with a loud alarm. If the sump pump Battery Backup system loses power or the battery needs replacing, then you will also receive an alert.

How Long Does a Battery Backup System Last?

The length of time that a Battery Backup system can work for is dependent on the amount of rainfall occurring whilst the power is off and how much water has reached the basement of the property.

It is estimated that a Battery Backup system can run for up to 53 hours however, if there are serious water problems and the pump is working harder then the battery may only last for 12 hours. (family handyman). Other factors that impact the length of time that the battery can last are:

  • The size of the battery
  • The consumption of power used by the sump pump system
